All suggested solutions are based on font substitution which is already part of 
PDFBox and will only work in very special cases.

IMHO the one and only solution is to implement a TTF reader to read all 
necessary information to create glyphs on our own. I'm doing some progess using 
some batik code. I hope there will be more soon.
