Not sure if this is useful, but I spent some time analyzing a bunch of test
PDFs from the Adobe Acrobat Engineering website, including a comparison with
Adobe's Preflight component. See following blog post (which contains links to

Needless to say the focus of this work is something Preflight wasn't really
designed for, but perhaps this is nevertheless useful.
