It seems to be jdk related. I ran some tests (PDFToImage -imageType jpg
-resolution 300) on my fedora 19 linux box (64bit, i7-3770, 16Gb):
Oracle 1.7.0_25: 25 seconds
Oracle 1.6.0_37: 20 seconds
OpenJDK 1.7.0_45: 5 seconds
