Oracle is primarily a sailing sports company and software isn't their
core business. We had some similar issues (with CMR fonts) and I even
made a bug report, and it went straight to /dev/null.
You could get the source with svn and modify that part yourself, it is
in the file Pagedrawer.java. It's not too difficult to force awt to be used.

real PCL or AFP fonts and print text as text. PDFBox 2.0 renders the
texts as vector graphics, so that we get a huge vector graphics output
instead.

If you can, please download the 2.0 version through svn which does not
have that problem. Although it is in development, it is pretty good :-)

I'm converting a pdf into an image. Since I have updated the Java
Runtime Environment from JRE 7 Update 17 to JRE 7 Update 51 text will
not be rendered.
