What I did notice: the PDF has this:
/ImageMask true /Decode [ 1 0 ]
changing it to
/ImageMask true /Decode [ 0 1 ]
changes the Adobe Viewer rendering, but not the rendering with PDFBOX. Which
suggests that the Decode is ignored.
