John Hewson commented on PDFBOX-2195:
-------------------------------------
The issue here is that the font is missing and doesn't exist on the system
(there's no such font as Tahoma Italic on Windows). I'm using a Mac and I see
an italic font with OS X Preview, Acrobat, and Foxit but not with PDFBox.
That's because PDFBox is using its fallback font, which is a regular sans-serif
font.
The other PDF viewers seem to be taking into account the FontDescriptor which
is associated with the missing font, which specifies that the font is
sans-serif and italic. I think it's using this information to make a smarter
fallback font substitution. We could probably support this soon in PDFBox as
part of PDFBOX-2149 which is under active development.
