Resolution: Not A Problem
Patterns are not supported in the 1.8 versions. However they are supported in
the unreleased 2.0 version (your file renders fine). You can get it with svn or
with maven (see download page / getting started page). If you want to try it
and need help, ask in the user mailing list.
(But if I were you, for a thumbnail application, I wouldn't bother much...)
