Fontbox has a very good TTF subsetter and I'd love to have this also for
PostScript based OTF fonts.
I know that this is currently missing and building OTF/PS support is hard, but
the recent Apache FOP release 2.2 seems to have added this to their codebase
with FOP-2252. I think this should better be part of Fontbox/PDFBox.
Unfortunately I wasn't even able to get the FOP 2.2 OTF Subsetter to work with
fonts on the local file system rather than embedded ones from PDFs. So there's
probably still work to do...
