Try with
[pdfbox-app-2.1.0-20170324.171002-789.jar|https://repository.apache.org/content/groups/snapshots/org/apache/pdfbox/pdfbox-app/2.1.0-SNAPSHOT/pdfbox-app-2.1.0-20170324.171002-789.jar]
And no problem, I got exactly 512 images.
That will be fine to have a 3.0.0 fixed
