Strictly speaking *W* must follow a path object, so it cannot be _applied to a 
non existent path_ in a valid PDF.

Thus, this is not fixing a _major bug_ but at best being nice to people having 
to deal with broken PDFs and at worst encouraging people to create broken PDFs.
