It’s not useless. It provides confidence to users that the IP, licensing and other ASF process have been followed so that they can have a high level of trust in the release. They they can look at the source any time they want to verify what is in it. They can also verify what they have is what was released. Also making a release is an act of the foundation and gives the people involved (i.e. the Pekko PPMC) legal protection.
