I am naive and new to this world of mod_bleeding_whatney's_red_label_perl and such, but ... seeings how this is a long running pain, wouldn't it make some sense to have apxs return a version number on its own? Is the deal that, often, apache isn't compiled yet, so that's why its rummaging around in .h files? Otherwise, parsing
httpd -v
would seem too obvious ... so you'all must know that and have a reason.
I'll shutup and review the archives. Sorry to mention it.
Actually, you need to at least build Apache before you can build mod_perl, so I suppose that parsing httpd -v would work. However, the reason for parsing #define's is that chances that they won't change are higher, than the output of 'httpd -v'. Developers may decide to change the output string at their whim. It's not so with #define's, because a lot of sw out there relies on them.
