Ya possible.  Need to compare the guideposts (the rowkeys with the region's 
start and end keys) with the new daughter region's start and end key. Add a new 
entry to the stats table after splitting the guideposts with the new daughter 
regions.
But still these would be done in the postSplit hooks only I suppose.
