Not necessarily, but usually the first column family is the default column 
family. This can be overridden by the DEFAULT_COLUMN_FAMILY property. The 
default column family is the column family that will contain a key value column 
that does not specify a column family. The empty column family is the column 
family that contains the empty key value. It will be the first column family 
that is created for a table. They don't have to be the same.
