I feel that this problem is not a bug of phoenix.
I have a similar problem when I only use Hbase to fetch data from a large table.

Condition A: If I scan a large amount of data from Hbase. And transform all the 
data to a Hash map, the timeout will happened.

Condition B: However, If I scan rows one by one, and using the row immediately, 
nothing wrong happened.

For phoenix.
If I use distinct or count, data process will be done on the server side, which 
just like the first condition A. (Maybe the memory of JVM could not hold so 
much data?)
If I select without distinct, I will get the result one by one. So it is ok.

I will change the usage of phoenix table, for example, use include with index 
if I need to distinct, or just select primary keys from local index table.
So maybe you could close the issue.
