Revised patch for PHOENIX-1653 incorporating feedback. In particular, there are
now dedicated getInputConnection and getOutputConnection methods in
ConnectionUtil (and references to the former getConnection method have been
updated), plus I've cleaned up the Javadoc and formatting issues that the code
review identified.
