Through further testing in my actual project I have identified a number of other small things that need to be addressed - for example the defaults for a new XSSFSimpleShape set the background to blue which is at odds with Excel (white), and also if you don't explicitly specify the text color then I'm getting it coming through as white by default although I seem to recall seeing this was an issue elsewhere?
