Both HSSF and XSSF throw this exception now when there is whitespace between
elements and closing parenthesis. I jumped from 3.12 to 3.14 so not sure if
this was in 3.13 or not.

XSSFSheet sheet = wb.createSheet();
Row row = sheet.createRow(0);
Cell cell = row.createCell(0);
cell.setCellFormula("(4 + 2)"); // This works

cell.setCellFormula("( 4 + 2)"); // This works
cell = row.createCell(2);
cell.setCellFormula("(4 + 2 )"); // FormulaParseException
