The xmlbeans build is currently on JDK 1.6 and I'm looking for a justification
to keep it on 1.6 or upgrade to 1.8.

Pro 1.6:
depending libraries aren't forced to upgrade

Pro 1.8:
mainly JAXP security fixes in JDK 1.7 [1]
after such a long time, the JDK upgrade pill might be easier to digest :)

Con 1.8:
for being semantic versioning conform, the xmlbeans version must be 3.x
