Ah, I see where this breaks. The old archiver returns both bytes and strings, whereas the new one will always return a string for the body. This can be worked around, but I thiiink there are some issues you have already identified around random behavior when no content-encoding is specified in the email? The six cases are all cases where utf-8 characters are used in what should be a US-ASCII email.
