Once a release is made, it is going to be much harder to fix any problems, especially design issues.
I don't think the code is ready for a release. There has been no discussion on the database design, and that may need to change quite a bit. There are also some aspects of the original design that are not ideal, for example trusting the Date: header. There may be other aspects that with hindsight could be done better now. Also I don't think the message parsing is entirely compatible compared to classic PonyMail. This particularly affects the Message-ID which is important for backwards compatibility and compatibility with mod_mbox.
