Hi,

Kevin, a "grammar checker" is one of eh oldest suggestions i've seen. the pros and cons have been discussed and dissected ad nauseam on the users list (an probably on Dicsuss too...). The ultimate concensus has always been that grammart checkers are more harmful than they are helpful.

On the other hand people have picked up existing grammar checkers and provided some form of integration for them with OOo via the API.

Currently the OOo core does not support integrating a grammar checker as deeply as the spell checker (with automated checking, marking dubious text with wavy lines, etc.) In the existing solutions the grammar checkers manipulate the OOo document from the outside. For full integration the core must be aware of the grammar checker and invoke it from the inside. Requirements for a grammar checker (plugin) interface that supports this are still being collected.

I personally have used several versions, and absolutely none were any use at all. In almost every instance, their suggeations would make my writing efforts worse.

I agree.

True, I have a far better knowledge and understanding of English grammar, and a far wider vocabulary, than most users (I rarely use a thesaurous, and then only for the hell of it so I can say I've used one :) ), but that also means that I am better equipped than many to see the shortcomings of such things. And believe me, in every case, I've had to reject 90% of the suggestions every time.

Would it have flagged the duplication of doing something, in every case, every time? :-P

For languages with a rigid sentence structure, a grammar checker could work. But IMO there will never be a successful grammar checker for English.

Personally I have the impression that checking grammar for other languages than English may be even more difficult in many cases.

Having said that, the subject is actually off-topic for this list. <[email protected]> and/or <[email protected]> is more appropriate.

I think there we've had more than enough discussion of this. If you want to get this done (and are willing and able to contribute), then the lingucomponent project (and <[email protected]>) is the best place for this. (That is also where you can ask about the existing grammar checker solutions - but look at the archives first!).

Ciao Joerg
