You might like to look at the way I've done the CD Rom page <http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/sellers.html>. It's done with Javascript, can't remember who wrote it, but you could grab it by substituting "/tableDecorate.js" for "/sellers.html" in the above URL. It uses CSS to set the colours for the rows, and a "class=" attribute in the <table> tags.
I am having some issues with the collabnet site at the moment, but as soon as things are back to normal, I'll change to using Light Grey and White for alternating colors.
Each row has a class of either oddrow or evenrow, so I can play with Colors very easily.
