you're completely right. We (QA + l10n-Team) need to improve this
together. I will discuss this with someone in our (Sun) translation
team when I'm back in the office in a few days.
as already said, I see some limitations in TCM, maybe those could be
adressed.
First .. TCM is a good starting point for managing Test Cases and
tracking test results. Compared to the smoke tests, it is a managing
portal, whereas smoke tests are only the written description.
So in theory, we could export all defined test cases from TCM and call
them "smoke tests". If we do so, it doesn't matter if you work with TCM
or just with the written description, as you will always do the same
tests. (Ok, you would loose the ability to easily track your results).
But .. and this is one of my main concerns: I never got an answer, if we
are allowed to do so. There is no license info about the test cases, it
is only known, that you need to sign the JCA to get access to TCM. So,
legal situation is at least vague (speaking for someone outside Sun).
JCA brings me to the next point: you cannot add testers quickly. If
people come and ask "I like to test, can you show me how" I need to say
.. sorry, no you need to sign the JCA first. It still takes weeks until
a JCA gots confirmed, but people may find more interesting things within
a shorter timeframe.
I can accept, that JCA is needed, when you are going to write /
translate test caese. But I don't see the point, why JCA is needed for
just executing tests.
Before listing some missing features in TCM, the third point: TCM is not
open source. Adding features to TCM is a very slow process, as only few
people are developing TCM and have the knowledge to add features. I
really think, we could speed this up, if we would make it open source.
Ok .. to the features I am missing:
- ability to assign test cases to more then one tester
- working test type (currently only l10n, but could be used to define
release tests)
- file export of test rresults to allow more flexible statistics.
- better integration with issuezilla (e.g. ability to track prioriy of
reported issues).
