He wrote the core part, called the kernel.  Then he did something strange, he 
released it to the public, but any upgrades had to also be released to the 
public.  It is the first, large scale OpenSource project.  And it continues to 
this day.  If you ask him, he will state "I started Linux, but I did not finish 
it."
