Hi,
I think the thread drifts in wrong direction. OOo is for end users and
an end user could have an older 2.x version and perhaps a Beta version
of 3.0 on the system. These are the versions which have to be detected
by the 'remove older versions'. And that is tested and checked. If there
is an error, perhaps it should be a stopper issue.
What this feature mustn't do is to clean up a tester environment with
different versions (perhaps only copies or without administration rights
or what ever). So it cannot handle a different set of 2.x versions and
3.0 developer milestones at once.
But I second, that the string isn't the best. In my opinion it's should
be fixed for OOo 3.1. Because another translation cycle will cost 2-3
weeks for these new strings. Then the release has to be shifted by
nearly a month into October '08. In my opinion this isn't a solution.
Beside this. Only when a version which could be removed by the installer
is on the system, the dialog in the Setup is called.
Regards,
Thorsten

Few day's ago I installed Dev300_m28 while I already had m23. The
installation procedure showed the 'should all previous versions
of OOo be removed' It was (and is) unclear if that also would
affect my 2.x installation as well. (So I answered No, of course).
Is this a known issue, or improved in the mean time?
It's a known issue, in that there was a big discussion about it (in
some non-public place, I fear). But there's no issue, AFAIK. In my
understanding, only old "released" versions (2.x) will be released,
perhaps only 2.4. However, because of the high number of
uncertainties associated with this box (which is even higher for
StarOffice installations, since StarOffice a) can upgrade user data
from OpenOffice.org, so perhaps also remove the installations? and
b) StarOffice knows product patches), I also would never check it,
without a good explanation, reachable from within the installer,
which tells me what will happen.
Ugh :-( IMO the only reasonable offering would be:
"The following versions of OpenOffice.org were detected on your
system. Please tick the ones you would like to be removed now:
[ ] OOo 2.4.1
[ ] OOo Dev300
The selected installations will be removed, but the directories with
your user-data will be preserved." or something similar.
Seconded! (with suggested minor changes). Of course some of the
options may need to be "greyed out" where results would be anomalous.
e.g. Trying to retain 2 sub-variants of 2.4.x; 3.0.x and the like
where the installation directories (and probably Registry entries
under Windows) would be the same.
