I went into Synaptic and removed the packages that appeared to be part of OOo. Having removed the packages, I returned to my untarred copy of the distribution, and tried again running the "update" script as God. I got a series of "Skipping deselected package . . ." messages and nothing appeared to have been installed. For a workaround, I tried going down into the DEBS directory and issuing (as the Superuser): dpkg -i *.deb This seemed to work. I am able to start up the app and have done a simple test in the spreadsheet.
