The current API for Sender, Receiver, StreamSender and StreamReceiver needs a
bit of cleanup and separation of concerns in some areas. In the underlying
implementation there is a fair bit of duplicated code for link handling that
can be pulled up to make adding other APIs for link type easier and require
less boilerplate code copying.
