As a sample of OS X (10.7) applications I looked at Chrome, Safari, Terminal and Adium. In all of them Command-W did 'close tab' and Shift-Command-W did 'close window'. In the first three they are actually called that, Adium uses 'close chat' and 'close'. Given that Safari and Terminal are Apple products, I think that Command-W as close tab instead of window is fairly standard now.
