Shrey Mehrotra commented on RANGER-381:
---------------------------------------

[~aloklal99] I think it is a common use case. I have created a user with
"shrey.mehrotra" in unix and the group is created with the same value. The user
sync service has successfully imported that user and group to the ranger admin
UI , but now i am not able to update the group. If we are restricting "." in
group from admin UI then usersyncservice would also not pick those groups from
unix or ldap to make the system consistent.

Similar use case is experienced by our QA where he added a user with "." in
value in unix and then tried to create same group from Ranger admin UI as he
is not using usersyncservice, but not able to do so. So in this scenario, that
user and group could not be governed using Ranger.

It would be good if we also consider this common scenario of dot in groups
along with maintaining backward compatibility.

> When creating group with dot in name (E.g. "hanish.bansal") from Ranger admin
> UI, it gives error message "Please enter valid name".
> Since linux group naming convention allow dot (.) character, so same should
> be allowed from Ranger admin UI.
