Just to follow up - The problem was traced back to Windows 2000 and its timezone handling: the JVM was running with a timezone that was different from the operating system's, possibly due to recent Daylight Savings changes in NZ. With some Googling, http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4762673 revealed the cause (a Windows bug) and the fix (change the timezone to something else and back).
