The default settings show allow you to get up and running without a roller-custom.properties file. We default to manual database setup and JNDI for database and mail session. However, manual setup means you have to upgrade your tables yourself.
It's not clear what is going wrong with your upgrade tho. Looks like the database is not setup right and thus the 'Trouble accessing property: site.frontpage.weblog.handle.'
