We are implementing gallery, search facility and more. You can see a preview of new UI here - http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/ROLLER/UI+design The first patch was meant more to share with the team what we have done so far and make sure that we are in the right direction with respect to our design, coding style etc. It's definitely not functionality-rich. In a week or two, we will start rolling out more patches when you will be able to see more pages (from the mockup above) in action.
