Entering a negative number in one cell (e.g. -1) followed by clicking a different cell (e.g. on cell A2) results in a very awkward string being entered: -1A2 instead of the number -1 and leaving the existing cell. Notable, the cell is not converted to a formula.

All in accordance with the specification. The new reference input rules are specified only for using the cursor keys. But you're right, the same logic should probably be applied to mouse clicks.
