Charles,
These classes are required only during compile time. GWT compiler generates
tons of java script code from their sources. You can easily remove compiled
classes and you EntryPoint will still work. I've run gwt client applications
multiple times only on Ngnix or Apache Httpd without any JAR. You also can
create an WAR archive with generated resources and it still will work.
I agree with you, that gwt-servlet is neccessary, but GWT user application is
only a html and js. That's why google splitted them in two separate bundles.
