Attach the WIP patch. The generated protobuf code is not included, as it is too
big.
The patch can be applied and built with:
{{mvn clean site:site site:stage package -DskipTests -Pcompile-protobuf
-Pbranch-2.8}}
[~gsaha], would you please help to take a look at the patch to make sure it is
on the right direction? I will add test cases later on.
