hi *,

sorry to resurrect this old topic but I have been working on this area lately
and it might make sense to clean some of the old stuff as well.

A while ago has been a discussion about URL mapping and vanity URLs [0] and
which one has precedence in the resource resolution phase.
As per [0] and per Felix analysis there are some cases where a vanityUrl is
“shadowed” by an URL mapping (in a nutshell the longer the pattern the higher
the preference, see [0] for details).

In [0] Felix proposed also a patch. The patch looks good to me and also other
think the same. There is only one problem with the patch though, indeed is not
fully backward compatible, since it reverses the evaluation order of URL
mapping and vanity URLs.
Somebody proposed to add a configuration to restore the old behavior is needed,
Alternatively we can keep the current behavior by default and have the
configuration to enable the new behavior (this might be better).

If you all agree I will apply the patch from Felix with the option of keeping
the current behavior and enable the switch (unless somebody will veto).

WDYT?

regards

antonio
