I explained the rationale behind the major release change in my response to 
Carsten.

My apologies if you didn't think I addressed your points.  Robert and Betrand 
have asked that conversations like this be discussed in the Dev mailing list. I 
have a [DISCUSSION] email out that was calling for a conversation and the lack 
of response I was interpreting as Apaches "silence is consent"  If you could 
echo your concerns there, I'd appreciate it.
