[~cziegeler]: Can we have a decision on this, please? This ticket and the 
corresponding PR has been in limbo ever since September, neither getting merged 
nor getting rejected. I can make changes if the current code is not acceptable, 
of course, but it feels like this ticket is staying open without any good 
reason.
