more accurately, that's what plugin writers might have to do for backwards 
compat.

Actually, could this be documented in the POD in Plugin.pm?   It's important to
note, since if such a plugin does get written, there probably will be a small
subset of users who'd still be using 3.0.0, and we don't want to fall into the
trap that perl does -- namely that we never realize there are backwards
compatibility issues until they occur in the field, because this isn't noted in
the documentation.

that could be a post-checkin fix btw.
