Hi!

For those that don't know, Sun has donated a Sun v40z server to the ASF, which
we have called helios. It's a 4-way Opteron (2.4Ghz) with 16GB of RAM with
~500GB internal disk space and a ~1TB external RAID running Solaris 10. This
box is going to purposed as a 'virtual' server to host per-PMC activities for
whatever they need. Unlike VMWare, this box will only be running Solaris. If
you need a specific OS, you will need to arrange with our VMWare admins.
Otherwise, we're going to eventually point you at the Solaris zones.

On a trial basis, while we work out the kinks, I'm willing to now set up a few
Solaris zones on helios (no more than 3 or 4, please). Basically, what you
will get is a root shell on your own Solaris 10 'box' with a dedicated name
and IP address.

My long-term preference is for us to assign a 'zone' to a PMC rather than to
an individual. However, if someone wants to setup a 'gump' zone just to
exercise the CPUs, please let me know. I will need to provide the root
password to the zone so that you can login and take it from there.

The goal right now is to test out directory/partitioning layouts and resource
limits (i.e. CPU and disk space restrictions). During the course of the
testing, we may need to shut down the zone to reconfigure them. There may
also be the possibility that we'll have to eventually wipe the entire zone,
too. (In a word, don't go placing production stuff on there yet!)

For now, the zones will be on one 146GB partition as I'm currently forgoing SW
RAID ATM on the zones due to the CPU overhead. If you think you will need
more space than that *right now*, please let me know. After we get the RAID5
FC card, we will move the zones into a ~1TB partition. (Adding more space to
the zone later is trivial, FWIW.)

I will do my best to make myself available to help administer the zone (i.e.
add users, learn Solaris, etc.). However, the goal should be that the PMC
will be responsible for administering the zone - not [EMAIL PROTECTED]

infra@ will take charge of the maintenance of the 'global' Solaris zone (i.e.
including all OS patches and software updates). We'll also control the /opt/
namespace in each zone to centrally install any software that should be
available to every zone. Other than that, we don't plan to touch the zones
in any meaningful way.

Please feel free to ask questions. Thanks. -- justin
