I didn't do anything to trigger it -- just checked email and found 45 unscored spam in my inbox. So we now know that removing the modifier has no bearing on the problem. So I just commented out the two problem rules mentioned above and now it is back to working fine again. I'd love to stay and troubleshoot it some more but it is Valentines Day and my wife is wondering why I'm so focused on email rather than her <heh, heh>.
