In the meantime, here is a very minimal patch along the lines that Justin suggested. It has the advantage of being very conservative and safe, in that it doesn't change what we have been doing on any platform other than MacOS. I propose we check this in now and then can take some time to investigate if POSIX::setgid does work ok on all the platforms that spamd runs on.
