I would propose that first mk_safe_tmpdir is revamped to use some actually safe
tmpdir generation functions

could easily be

satestXXXXXX

which should shorten it already under the limit I think

We could also check the resulting directory length in mk_safe_tmpdir, and if it
looks too long, revert to using /tmp /var/tmp /dev/shm etc, testing if they are
writable. I really don't like putting this stuff on public tmp-directories
unless it's absolutely necessary.
