I have found that the perf regression is caused by the Hadoop config:
io.file.buffer.size = 4096
Before the commit
https://github.com/apache/spark/commit/278f6f45f46ccafc7a31007d51ab9cb720c9cb14,
we had:
io.file.buffer.size = 65536
