I want to clarify that my performance tests on the latest code were fairly
simple. I did more exhaustive performance tests on an older version of the
code that looked good to me, but I didn't save any of the numbers.
I am planning to merge this in shortly once I verify all of the unit tests
still pass, but I think we should see if we can reproduce the increased CPU
utilization that @HeartSaVioR saw in a follow on JIRA.
