Repeat after me ... "the parts of JSF that Shale proposes to depend on have NOTHING to do with visual components ...". Thus, any arguments over whether JSF adequately helps you build rich web interfaces (it doesn't yet -- that was out of scope for 1.0) are not relevant to the Shale decision.
