I couldn't agree more. As annoying as it is to deal with PMs at work sometimes (and as annoying as I'm sure I am to those under me when I wear the PM hat), it is really a vital role.

I absolutely think more rigid PM practices should be brought into the OSS world. It could only make things better. And I absolutely think there should be people with PM skills who *only* do PM chores.

Unfortunately, whether anyone cares to admit it or not, egos play a huge role in community-driven development. Egos tend to not going along well with anything "rigid".
