Sure, I'm not against building the example using only Maven (despite my personal adversion ;), and if this patch does the job, go ahead and commit it.
As for the struts mailreader, it could go in the cvs.apache.org repo, but it isn't "official", so I don't know if it could go somewhere like ibiblio.
