Could you post a full build log?  I believe your patch should not be
necessary so I'd like to see.  Maybe with libtool verbose mode:

    make 2>&1 LTFLAGS='--tag=CC --verbose' | tee build.log

Also ... does Ubuntu Lucide use binutils-gold?  That could make a
difference.  Although it really shouldn't.
